Cowboy Churches
Cowboy Churches are Nazarene church plants that reach out to western heritage culture. They meet in barns and arenas. Cowboy churches have been started in Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio, and Colorado.
Cowboy Church University
Cowboy Church University (CCU) is a training event on making followers of Jesus amidst cowboy culture.
Cowboy culture (or Western Heritage culture) has been largely unreached by the traditional church, despite its wide acknowledgement of spiritual reality and a friendly history with Christianity. In this context, culturally specific churches have broken down barriers and brought in new people by the thousands.
These churches often meet in barns, saloons, or arenas; baptisms can be done in horse troughs, and cowboy boots and hats are the norm. People who “just couldn’t have imagined myself in a church!” are able to worship in an environment where they feel comfortable coming as they are.
The training lasts 3 days and deals with practical issues. Strategy, buildings, ministries, music, and more are covered by experienced practitioners. Needless to say, it’s also a wonderful time of fellowship.
The April 2011 CCU in Red Oak, TX went great! We had almost 50 in attendance and had to make some emergency runs for more program books. Jon Coe and company were excellent hosts and the presentations were insightful.
The September 2011 CCU, also in Red Oak, was equally a success, with 16 in attendance.
Our next CCU will be August 31 - September 2, 2012 in Pueblo, CO.
